Greeting to all Parents and Patrons of USD 272:
With the athletic seasons upon us, I would like to take some time and reflect on the topic of “sportsmanship.”
- Show respect for the opponents at all times.
- Show respect for the officials.
- Know, understand and appreciate the rules of the contest.
- Maintain self control at all times.
- Recognize and appreciate the skill in performance regardless of the affiliation
- Help develop a community reputation for good sportsmanship.
- Give encouragement to and recognition of good plays to everyone.
- Be a role model by being positive in every manner possible.
- Support those playing, coaching, and officiating.
- Respect the judgment and strategy of the coach.
As you know, most everyone follows these tips and suggestions, but one or two people not following these can make an event a miserable experience for everyone. So please make it a point to be a positive influence on the event that you are attending. Here are a couple of quotes concerning sportsmanship that I came across during some of my reading.
"Never give up, never give in, and when the
upper hand is ours, may we have the ability to handle the win with
the dignity that we absorbed the loss."
-Doug Williams
"Sportsmanship for me is when a guy walks
off the court and you really can't tell whether he won or lost,
when he carries himself with pride either way."
-Jim Courier
Thank you for your continued patronage to our school district,
Jeff Travis
