Lakeside Knight News…

English I- Mrs. Sharp

Both classes read the classic novel The Red Badge of Courage.  We mainly read orally and discussed the story as we read.  The students were then test over the content of the story.  Both classes watched the very old (black and white) movie of this novel.  The students are currently preparing for the 1semester final.

English II- Mrs. Bertuccelli

The students have been reading and studying new vocabulary.  We have also been watching films about the stories that we read and a few just for fun. The focus this semester will be to increase reading comprehension and to increase vocabulary. We will continue with some grammar study and I hope to include a novel before the end of the year.

English III- Mrs. Bertuccelli

The juniors will be preparing for state assessments. We will begin reading short essays and discussing the important elements found in the writing. We will set aside one day each week to practice for the tests. On other days, we will continue to read short stories, and a play. Our vocabulary study will continue on Fridays.

Journalism- Mrs. Bertuccelli

The push is on now to build the perfect yearbook. We are creating pages, taking photos, and collecting data at a rapid pace. The book will contain 125 pages of memories, so we have our work cut out for us. The students are becoming proficient in the use of Photoshop, In-Design, and Year-tech soft ware. The students are also learning about photography, journalistic writing, and public relations.

Composition II- Mrs. Bertuccelli

A new semester brings a new class. This class is offered for dual credit or may be taken  as a high school English 4 credit. The focus of this class is to read and interpret literature. The students will be required to compose essays that express their discoveries. We will utilize all of the skills learned first semester when composing the essays. When we write about literature we always use present tense because each time we read a story it is occurring all over again.

Public Speaking

College level public speaking is being offered this semester. We learn strategies and delivery skills that are important in the business world. The number one requirement of a new hire is that they must be able to give a report or express themselves clearly in the workplace. All of the colleges require this class as a Gen/Ed. The students will deliver 5 major speeches and take two exams.

Earth and Space Science- Mrs. Sharp

The students in both classes finished chapter 6 cover Earth’s rocks.  The chapter was about the three classifications of rocks and their different formations, textures, and mineral composition.  The students then did a rock lab where they had to feel and look at varies rocks with a magnifying glass and try to identify the rock based on their observations.  We will continue this lab when we come back from our Christmas break.

Accounting- Mrs. Durham

The accounting students have just wrapped up the semester by learning how to do End-of-Fiscal-Period Work.  This includes completing a Work Sheet, Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Adjusting Entries, Closing Entries, and Post Closing Trial Balance.   We will begin the new year learning accounting procedures for partnerships.

Computer Applications- Mrs. Durham

The computer application classes have just wrapped up studying Microsoft Office Excel in its entirety.  Students learned to work with formulas, and functions, as well as create customized charts.  The new year will find the computer application students working with Microsoft Office Access (database).

Algebra I- Mrs. Martin

The Algebra I class has been working with solving multi-step linear inequalities.  Along with this they have been solving compound inequalities.  They have had to recognize whether it is an “and” or and “or” statement and then be able to graph the solution.  They are getting better at being able to do this graphing.

Algebra II – Mrs. Martin

The Algebra II class has continued with the concept of factoring.  They have worked with fractional coefficients and rational expressions.  They have to simplify them and to do this they have to factor and find common terms. This is a long chapter with a great deal of material.  They have also been working with simplifying inequalities.

Calculus- Mrs. Martin

The Calculus class has been working with finding the anti derivatives which is the opposite of finding the derivatives.  They do a lot of graphing with their graphing calculators finding minimum and maximum values.  This brings in the concept of critical values.  This class works hard together and has been doing a good job.

Geometry- Mrs. Martin

The Geometry class has been working with inequalities involving geometric sides and angles.  Along with this they have learned how to do an indirect proof. This process involves making a statement and then trying to prove it false.  They had a little trouble at first understanding the concept but are now doing a good job with the proofs.

College Algebra- Mrs. Martin

The College Algebra class has been working with matrices.  They have had to rewrite the matrices in row-echelon form which is tedious.  This class is winding down and will be completed with the semester final that begins Thursday the 18th and end on Monday the 22nd.  They have all worked very hard and been an enjoyable class to teach.

Life Skills- Mrs. Dean

Life Skills students have been completing BIONIC projects.  BIONIC stands fro “Believe It Or Not I Care”.  Speaker Sandy Shields, came from Minneapolisand shared about 30 different types of projects.  Students utilized the FCCLA planning process to individualize, plan and complete a project of their choice.  Projects are destined for the Men’s Rescue Mission, the Domestic Violence Association of Central Kansas, local nursing homes, and items for children in the hospital during the holidays.   The purpose of the project is organization, planning, implementation and time management as students give to others.

Spanish Classes- Mrs. Rotman

¿Cuántocuesta? How much does it cost?Spanish 1 is studying words for clothing and shopping. Quiero comer pizza. I want to eat pizza.  Spanish 2 will be studying words for food and how to order at a restaurant. ¿Qué tiempo hace? What´s the weather like? The students in Spanish 3 will be studying words to use when talking about the weather. Yo he ido. I have gone. Spanish 4 is studying the present perfect tense.

Desktop Publishing- Mrs. Rotman

Students have finished a project to make a 12 month calendar that contains their own photography. Next they will learn to use the software program “Illustrator” and will be creating an original logo design for a T-shirt.

Multi-Media- Mrs. Warner

The Multi-media class has been working on various activities using the Occupational Outlook Handbook.   A career choice is one the most important decisions that students will make in life, and these activities will help students explore all their career options.  The OOH is published by the U. S. Department of Labor and is revised every two years, so students can find the latest information about their career of choice.

Freshmen PE- Mr. Beisner
The boys have been working hard in the weight room and the gym since Thanksgiving.  Many freshman are making great strides in the weight room.  Still try to work on form and quality sets each day.  Don't focus on the amount of weight lifted, but the quality of the weight you are lifting.  Following the New Year we will introduce new games such as Badminton, Floor Hockey, and Pickle Ball.

Strength and Conditioning- Mr. Beisner

Both classes are working hard.  Progress can be seen in their weekly logs.  During basketball season we are down to three days lifting.  Students are encouraged to attend lifting in the morning on Mondays and Thursdays with Coach Christians.  We have had a steady group of 12-15 lifters with just a couple having perfect attendance.

Animal and Plant Science- Mr. Hutson

The Animal and Plant Science class at LHS has been working this month on Meat Science.  Students have learned about the process of animal slaughter, types of slaughter, animal bone and muscle anatomy and types of grading.  The students have also learned to identify the different Quality Grades in beef and have learned to figure Yield Grades in beef based on Fat Thickness, % Internal Fat, Hot Carcass Weight, and Ribeye Area.

FFA- Mr. Hutson

Members of the Lakeside FFA took part in the Northwest District FFA Job Interview Contest held at Northern Valley High School this month.  Participants had to prepare a Job Resume and a Job Cover Letter and send these in prior to the contest.  At the contest site, the members took part in a mock job interview.  The interview score was then combined with the resume and cover letter score to get an overall score.  Lakesidescored 1855 points to come in at 6th place overall as a team.  Members who attended were:  Trenton Heinen, Freedom Green, Ryan Gasper, Chris Steinshouer, and Anthony Long.

The FFA chapter also has been holding a collection drive for old, working and non-working, cell phones, printer cartridges, and IPODs.  These are then sent into a company who then recycles the parts of these items so that they don’t end up in landfills.  So far the chapter has collected more than 120 electronic items.     Upcoming events for the Chapter include the December Christmas party, District Speech contest, Dairy Foods and Food Science Contest, Ag. Mechanics contest and FFA Week.

Choir- Mrs. Koops

First, some leftover details from December.  Audrey Doane. Trenton Heinen, Freedom Green, Adrienne Koops and Taylor Wiese participated in the northwest district honor choir on Dec. 13 in Hays.  They were part of a fabulous concert and a entirely great day.  Now that the business of the holidays has passed, we will spend some time watching a musical and then back to singing.

Wishing all of you a great New Year as we prepare to start the second semester.

High School Band- Mrs. Long

January will bring pep band music.  We are in hopes that you will hear a few new pep band tunes this year.  January 10th, Rachel Renken will travel to Salina to audition with more than 100 other flutists, for a chance to be selected into the State High School Honor Band. If she makes it, then she will go to Wichita at the end of February for a three day rehearsal and concert that is held at the Century II Concert Hall.  Good Luck to Rachel!  We are all rooting for you!

Several HS band students were selected to participate in the K-State Honor Band.  The date for the event is January 23-25.  I will give another update on students participating and how the weekend event unfolded in the February newsletter.

FCCLA- Mrs. Dean

Shelbi Hall, Kansas1st vice president spoke to the club about the benefits of serving as an officer.  Developing leadership traits and helping others were part of her presentation.  Students also enjoyed a Christmas meal during lunch as their holiday share time.  For community service the club is collecting pop tabs for Ronald McDonald House and toys for the Salvation Army.
