Mrs. Hennes

February started with great excitement.  Celebrating Groundhog Day and the 100th Day of School both on the 2nd.  We were also excited to have Mrs. Specht join our class for a discussion about Dental Health all in the same week.

Nadine Siggle from the Extension Agency joined our class for seven weeks to help us learn about the basic food groups and nutrition.

We continue to improve our reading skills, writing skills, and work on numbers.  Kindergarten is currently learning about coins.  We have eight students in the 100's club and beyond.  We've focused on learning about mammals, reptiles, animal needs, the water cycle, the Olympic games, and President's Day.  Boy are we busy!!!

We are all hoping for Spring to arrive soon.  Come see us and join the fun in Kindergarten.

February has been a busy month and March will be short!  The second grade has had several celebrations, 100 days of school, Valentines Day, and Presidents Day.  But most of our time is spent working on addition and subtraction facts so we can do 100 in 5 minutes.  We are also regrouping in double digit subtraction.

Story elements are a part of our reading lessons along with reading fluency and vocabulary.  We have also done almost 100 lessons of Saxon Phonics with almost 100 sight word cards, sound and picture cards.  These skills have helped in our learning about nouns and verbs in English and spelling in certain patterns.  Second graders have also read about habitats in science and directional activities in social studies.

We look forward to SPRING activities, outdoor recesses, a warmer classroom, and NO colds!

3rd Graders have joined the world of Kansas Assessments. They are busily preparing for their tests. It involves a lot of review in math. We are working hard on adding, subtracting, telling time and working with geometric shapes. They are also reading a lot of short passages and answering questions on them. I have encouraged Accelerated Reader tests and working on SRA’s.  In February we studied units in Social Studies on the American Revolution, the beginning of our country and learned more about President Washington and Abraham Lincoln. In Science we are studying the Laws of Motion. This class has done an excellent job in Shurley English. They enjoy the jingles about the 8 parts of Speech and have learned the sentence flows for identifying the jobs of a word in a sentence. Yea, for them!!!
